For the first time Paradox will be an official stage during the Roadburn festival. For four days Paradox and Roadburn present heavy music with a great variety of musical approaches. On Sunday you'll see Het Concreet from The Netherlands, Arist in ResidentDirk Serries with Martina Verhoeven Quintet from Belgium and an improvised HEAVY JAM, including members of the Norwegian band KANAAN and Dutch/Belgium rockers of RRRAGS.
Het Concreet (NL/IT) To put things very concise and concrete: Dutch sound collective Het Concreet are surveyors of sound, eager to explore all its inherent physics, mysteries and possibilities. Soundscapes, vinyl releases, multisensory installations, performance livestreams, interactive walks; founders Mathijs Leeuwis, Mathijn den Duijf and Anneroos Goosen each share an insatiable curiosity for the many ways we experience sound within an analog environment. Obviously, Het Concreet has set up a couple of specific ground rules to make projects fruitful and worth pursuing. First of all, no digital intermediates of ones and zeroes apply here: their work revolves around sound in its true, natural habitat. Second, experimenting takes precedence over predesign. Third, collaboration is key: musicians, philosophers, scientists and the audience themselves take on an active role in adding meaning to abstract sounds. And finally, documentation: each project Het Concreet undertakes comes with new wisdom, vision, skill and experience.
For Roadburn’s Paradox program, Het Concreet will perform within a special lineup led by Mathijs Leeuwis and Mathijn den Duijf. Leeuwis – who was recently named City Composer of Tilburg is a versatile cat; adept at both abstract sound and limitless imagination. Den Duijf meanwhile is a wizard of tape recorders and compositions, equally captivated by Italian opera as heavy techno.
The two new players entering the arena are just as enticing: Roberto Pistolesi, who manned the skins and percussion for ensembles led by the likes of Steve Grossman and Antonio Faraò. As a foil for Pistolesi’s jazz background, Het Concreet enlisted vocalist Theo Decloedt, whose operatic cadence adds an entirely different dynamic element. This quartet will combine their respective talents for a compelling electro-acoustic experiment, completely oblivious of preexisting styles. Tape loops, deep vocals and sizzling percussions coalescing in a single room? That’s a level of awesome one wouldn’t dare to miss.
Artist-in-residence Dirk Serries: Martina Verhoeven Quintet (BE) The grand finale of Dirk’s residency is the Martina Verhoeven Quintet. Dirk runs a record label, A New Wave of Jazz, which focuses on his quest for free improvised, avant-garde and free jazz music - this curiosity and passion shines through on the final piece of this puzzle. The quintet is built around the piano virtuosity of polymath and multi-instrumentalist, Martina Verhoeven. The assembled musicians - Dirk on acoustic guitar, Onno Govaert on drums, Gonçalo Almedia on double bass, and Colin Webster on saxophone will create a high tension, free improvisation performance led by Martina’s energetic and unique piano playing.
